The Effects of Fentanyl Preloading on the Cardiovascular Response to Endotrachel Intubation

Abstract
The effects of fentanyl on controlling the hemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and intubation have been studied in 50 normotensive adult patient undergoing elective surgery.
Two groups were observe and each group included 25 patients. Patients were randomly assigned to receive saline 4cc with thiopental sodium 5mg/Kg(Group 1) or fentanyl 3 ug/Kg with thiopental sodium 3 mg/Kg(Group 2) for induction of anesthesia. The
changes of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure(MAP), and heart rate (HR) were recorded at just after, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, 5 min, and 10 min after intubation.
Group 1 showed significant increase of SBP, DBP, MAP, and HR, but no significant increase were note in Group 2 to tracheal intubation.
It is suggested that low dose (3ug/Kg) of fentanyl significantly prevents post-intubation hypertentoin, tachycardia when used as an adjunct to thiopental sodium for the induction of anesthesia.
